Mark Watson-Mitchell – 02.07.2026
Having risen from 145p to 480p on Thursday 21st May, the shares of Filtronic, in one of the UK markets ‘fliers’ in 2026, recorded an impressive 331% price gain for the SQC Research Recovery Portfolio.
That increase was a reaction to the very strong investor interest surrounding the massive US IPO of SpaceX, to whom Filtronic is a key supplier.
That significant ‘space sector’ push inevitably saw prices fall back after the float, with Filtronics shares collapsing back to 215p a week ago, surrounded by rumours of a substantial ’shorting operation’ being in progress.
Yesterday they hit 305p before closing at 280p – at which level I see a mix of subsequent ‘short-covering’ and fresh positions being taken out, perhaps hinting that investors are looking to a good statement from the group when it reports its Final Results on Tuesday, 4th August.
They are still up an excellent 93.10% in the last 70 market days.
Not too far behind has come Ramsdens Holdings, with a 73.53% gain in the same period – helped by the £206m cash bid from the US-based FirstCash pawnbroking group.
My suggestion to holders of Ramsdens shares is to take the price offered by market-makers, to get instant cash at around 590p as opposed to waiting for a couple of months or so for completion.
There really are so many other attractive undervalued opportunities for reinvestment.
Currys, which this morning reported an excellent set of Final Results, is up 27.81% and taking third place in the portfolio’s performance table.
The only laggard in the list is James Fisher and Sons, down 2.55%, which is disappointing, but I am convinced that they will come positive.

Overall, the portfolio is up a market-beating 22.96% over the last 70 market days.
