The substantial dealings in the shares of the Sedgefield-based Filtronic (LON:FTC) took them to a new High of 420p, up a noteworthy 133p, a one-day gain of 46.3% at their best.
They subsequently fell back to 310p on waves of profit-taking, before closing at 350p, up 63p on the day, sporting a 21.95% gain.
There were some 9,807,118 shares traded in the day, well over four times the recently increased daily average volume.
The shares were up over 36 times the original SQC Research Profile price four years ago!
Broker's View
Last week, analyst Jon Byrne, at Berenger, was 'spot on' when he called the mood in the group's shares as offering UK exposure to space and that the shares were a Buy.
The broker reckoned that Filtronic is the best ‘pure-play’ space play in the UK market.
He reiterated his ‘Buy’ recommendation on the equity and increased his Target Price from 213p to 360p on the designer and manufacturer of components critical for communication, aerospace, defence, and space industries, which were trading down 5.5% at 252p a week ago.
The analyst stated that the shares remain ‘one of the best-positioned pure-play space names in the UK market’ before going on to say that:
"There has been an uptick in space-tech newsflow in recent months, driven by increasingly frequent satellite launches and greater investor interest in the network services that will evolve to support this growth.
The period has also seen developments for Filtronic, including new customer contracts and product launches, which we believe increase its potential growth."
My View
What can I say?
This really has been shown to be one of the SQC Research 'all-time winners' - touching a 36 times multiplier at one stage today.
Is there more to come?
Well, considering the mega-dealing activity in the stock, it has rapidly become a real 'punters paradise', which could well show investors how dangerous it can be to play this market.
Yes, there certainly will be a lot more action to come - but just be careful that Filtronic's journey into Space doesn't freeze your portfolio as it ascends in price.
